The prices of these fluorescent sets when new were very expensive

compared to a regular set of tungsten lamps, even the individual lamps

were around fifty cents to one dollar compared to ten cents or two for

fifteen cents for nulk glass tungsten bulbs. A string of eight lamps sold

for about tive dollars, considerably more expensive than ix,candescent

lamps. But Consumer Research Bulletin, which ran studies on the bulbs,

reminded consumers that they were more energy efficient, longer lasting

(in excess of 300 hours), and added more soft light to the tree (2 -inches

in diameter). Sylvania rated their life expectancy at one thousand hours

or more which, under average conditions of use, meant several holiday

seasons. Good Housekeeping recommended fluorescent lights be tucked

into branches on a mantle, or in a basket of greens on a console table.

These soft, pastel-colored bulbs burned quite coolly; resulting in an

added safety factor.
