While we celebrated at home, thousands of men of the Army and Navy Bravely sang around government
Christmas trees, wondering what they would do when the last orange and carton of cigarettes had been handed
out by the grimly cheerful oficer. No doubt, afterwards, they’ strolled to their tents and barracks to study well-
worn maps of the cities and towns they, knew so well. The war caused not only servicemen, but those people
left at home as well, to be a bit more thoughtful than usual and to be wide open to memories in a period when
memories meant our survival in harsh and severe times. Certain traditions were not abandoned, in part, simply
because these traditions triggered memories and helped us to carry on as best we could
